i have two partitions.
my main c drive and the d partition that has data on it.
i am moving the data off the d drive.
i wanna make the c drive one partition.
is there an easy way to do this with windows XP ?
once i move the data from the d partition, what do i do next?
Thanks!
Well, once you move the data from the D drive, you'll need to expand the C partition to take the space the D drive had. There's a command line utility to du this, it's called partdisk. There may be a facility in it to merge partitions.
ok, here's the link i found:
https://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/dm_extend_basic_volume.mspx?mfr=true
and this is what i tried to do. what command am i entering wrong. the d: partition has a system volume information folder. can i remove it somehow? it wont let me. even though i made sure the read only box isn't checked.
this is what i tried to do.
DISKPART> list volume
Volume ### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info
---------- --- ----------- ----- ---------- ------- --------- --------
Volume 0 E DVD-ROM 0 B
Volume 1 F magicJack CDFS CD-ROM 1024 KB
Volume 2 C NTFS Partition 51 GB Healthy System
Volume 3 D Backup NTFS Partition 17 GB Healthy
Volume 4 J Elements NTFS Partition 2795 GB Healthy
Volume 5 G Wd NTFS Partition 466 GB Healthy
Volume 6 I NTFS Partition 279 GB Healthy
DISKPART> select volume 2
Volume 2 is the selected volume.
DISKPART> extend [17000 = 2]
The arguments you specif ed for this command are not valid.
DISKPART> extend [17000=2]

Ok, i used this third party software to do what i wanted to do.
it worked great!
this gave me an extra 17 gigs of free space which is exactly what i need.

Excellent! I'll admit that diskpart isn't the easiest thing to use, but when you stack it next to fdisk, diskpart's a piece of cake.
i've never used either one and that was my first attempt. i've rarely been into command line.
